...Whether you are an educational developer looking for one book to share with your teaching staff, or a university teacher wanting to choose one book to help improve your teaching, this is the book you’ve been searching for. It’s a book I’ve been searching for for years.

ROBERT GRAY

Associate Professor of University Pedagogy, University of Bergen, Norway

In this fabulously comprehensive introduction to better teaching, Barkley and Major provide a clear framework and practical tools for improvement. They have somehow managed to survey everything from learning theories and assessment strategies to inclusion and visual design succinctly in this brief but substantial handbook. Here, the vast literature on teaching and learning is made engaging and manageable for all faculty.

JOSÉ ANTONIO BOWEN

Senior Fellow, American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)

Higher education is teeming with new ideas about effective teaching and learning. What’s sometimes missing, however, is a framework, an integrative vision, that pulls together the many promising insights and innovations from the last few decades. That is the gift that Barkley and Major give us in their latest volume. Designed to work in tandem with the K. Patricia Cross Academy, Engaged Teaching combines thoughtful summaries of relevant research along with descriptions of promising practices that educators can use right now—and build on. The volume concludes with a call for reflective practice and pedagogical inquiry in pursuit of ongoing improvement—for individual educators, the profession of teaching, and our students' learning.

PAT HUTCHINGS

Senior Scholar, National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) / Senior Scholar, Bay View Alliance (BVA)

The two foremost scholars of college teaching, Barkley and Major, have produced a user-friendly treasure trove of research-based information on engaged teaching in higher education. Their volume equips college and university faculty members with the pedagogical knowledge to complement disciplinary knowledge and belongs on the desks of novice and experienced college teachers as a ready reference to guide teaching practice.

JOHN M. BRAXTON
